Wouldn’t we all love to have younger, brighter, smoother skin? I certainly would, so I was delighted when Dr Sanjay Gheyi of Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic suggested I try out Microdermabrasion.

The ancient Egyptians are said to be the first to use dermabrasion skin care techniques to improve their skin. Kings and queens used alabaster and pumice to remove blemishes and rough spots and make their skin smooth and soft.

Dr Gheyi uses a procedure called Diamond Microdermabrasion, a skin-resurfacing treatment used to improve fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture, brown spots, enlarged pores, scars and acne blemishes. Dead skin cells are removed and cellular activity is stimulated, resulting in a rejuvenated, smoother and brighter complexion. Not only is the face a likely victim of sun damage and ageing, but the neck, chest, cleavage, arms and hands may be affected as well.

Before we started I asked Dr Gheyi a little more about the treatment – particularly whether it would hurt! Dr Gheyi assured me that the procedure is painless with no downtime, and is a very relaxing facial treatment. Before starting the Microdermabrasion a cleanser was gently massaged into my skin. Dr Gheyi explained that this was a lymphatic drainage massage to prepare my face for the Microdermabrasion.

Next the Microdermabrasion wand was passed over my skin. The wand tip is embedded with natural diamond chips, and can be used with different chip sizes to ensure correct resurfacing for each individual's skin type. The wand used on my face was a fine grade with a mild suction. It was moved gently in straight lines across my skin, which gave a slight tickly sensation. The wand was then changed for one with a slightly coarser grade of diamond chips and the procedure was repeated. This coarser grade of diamond felt mildly scratchy, but still painless.

After the Microdermabrasion an oxygen mask was laid over my face for a few minutes. Oxygen was gently blown through a tube attached to the front of the mask. The oxygen helps to speed up collagen production and soothes the newly-exfoliated skin.

When the oxygen treatment was complete a vitamin C serum was applied to my face, followed by a moisturising recovery cream. When I looked in the mirror I expected my skin to be slightly red, but it wasn’t – in fact it looked fresh and vibrant and felt extremely soft and smooth.

Dr Gheyi recommends a course of Microdermabrasion treatment for the best results. I enjoyed the experience and was impressed with the improvement to my skin afterwards. I will certainly be returning to Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic for further treatments.
